Chan Brings Home Gold From World's

Local gymnast takes five medal sweep in Dublin

Ottawa's Ada Chan, originally from Hong Kong, was the only representative from Ottawa at the 2003 World Games held in Dublin, Ireland, where over 7000 athletes from 160 countries showcased their athletic skills, courage and dignity in 18 sporting events.

Held from June 20-29, Chan came home with five medals in rhythmic gymnastics gold in ball, silver in hoop and all-round, and bronze in ribbon and rope. Chans parents originally encouraged their daughter to participate in sports to build strength, promote health and coordination. They have both seen incredible results.

“Her health has improved from her participation in sports,” said Merlin and Teresa Chan, adding that she is also involved in swimming and playing the violin.

Chan has attained Level 3, which is the highest level of competition for Special Olympic athletes. Winning gold for Canada is a great example of a talented young lady that decided to pursue her dreams and work hard to accomplish her goals.

“Ada has a great memory. She was teaching the other girls the new routines today. She can see a routine once and she remembers it. Ada is very talented, has good concentration and always works very hard. She trains with the competitive program and has a great work ethic,” said Head Coach Xinhong (Sing) Jin, from the Ottawa Rhythmic Gymnastics Club.

Competing at all levels of competition, Chan has won gold medals at the provincial, national and international events in both swimming and rhythmic gymnastics. As a swimmer, Chan has won 19 medals and 20 medals as a gymnast. Chans accomplishments also include winning a talent show playing her violin last year at Sir Guy Carleton Secondary School.

Ada is a member of the Ottawa Rhythmic Gymnastics club, who were the Kanata Cup 2003 Champions, where she trains twice a week in addition to the two hours a week with the Special Olympics group.

The Ottawa Rhythmic Gymnastics club has certified coaches from Canada, Russia, Japan and China. The quality of coaching is excellent and they offer very attractive recreational and competitive programs. Next week, Chan will be training with Erika-Leigh Stirton, a three time Canadian National Champion and 1998 Commonwealth Games Champion. Stirton will be the guest coach at the Ottawa Rhythmic summer camp next week. The full program summer camp starts Aug. 25 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and costs $165/week (full day) or $85/week (half day).

Registration for the 2003 fall sessions at the Ottawa Rhythmic Gymnastics Club will start on Aug. 27 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 50 Maple Lane, Mont St-Joseph, Ottawa.
